2024 Volkswagen ID.7 77 kWh | At last, the proper ID

The new VW ID.7 should take Volkswagen’s electric brand to a whole new level with new technology and up to 700 kilometers of range.

Since Volkswagen decided to opt for electric mobility, things have not been exactly all that great in Wolfsburg. In a pretty short time, Volkswagen has been hitting the market with the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5. Cars that sold pretty well, but never really gave a convincing report.

Recognizable

Apart from the front, it is impossible to confuse the ID.7 with its smaller ID-relatives. Every VW ID-product has the same -yes, I need to say it- dull face with the typical light signature that connects the VW logo with the headlights. Moving to the side, the round overall look continues and that’s not only for the show. The teams in Wolfsburg have worked hard on the aerodynamics which resulted in a drag coefficient of just 0.23 for this electric sedan. Now you know why the side view is so similar to that of the Mercedes EQS and EQE. And just like those electric Mercedes, the Volkswagen ID.7 has an LED stripe across the entire width of the car.

Big boy

Although the exterior takes the recipe of the other electric VWs, the interior of the ID.7 -even though this one is also very recognizable from the other IDs- gets some welcome additions: better ergonomics and a good finish. So you are in an interior with beautiful materials, great build quality and improved ergonomics. The infotainment system in the middle measures a whopping 15 inches and works like a charm with a clear homepage. You also have a small screen (like every ID) in front of your nose and above that there’s also a head-up display. Yes, the steering wheel controls remain touch-sensitive and are still too sensitive! You can’t have everything.

Thanks to its large wheelbase of 2.97 meters (the whole length is 4.96 meters), this large sedan spoils its passengers with generous interior space. And that both at the front and back. The only disadvantage is that the rear passenger’s knees are forced a little too high due to the floor high up. Not only do the passengers get a sea of space but also the luggage. With 532 liters, the VW ID.7 isn’t shy on boothspace.

Drivetrain

Underneath the skin, this ID.7 rolls on the well-known MEB platform… with a twist. There is a unique calibration and adaptive dampers. At the moment of testing and writing this, Volkswagen offers two drivetrains. There’s a 77 kWh (Pro) battery with rear-wheel drive, 286 hp and 550 Nm of torque, delivering a 0-100 km/h of 6.5 seconds possible. This is the model we are testing and Volkswagen is talking about a range of 610 kilometers, we managed 580 and that’s pretty decent with an average consumption of 15 kWh/100km. The second drivetrain is an 86 kWh (Pro S or GTX) battery. The Pro S can be seen as the “long-range model” with 700 kilometers (according to Volkswagen), while the GTX is the sporty one with 340 hp and 560 Nm of torque. The all-wheel drive GTX will hit zero to 100 km in 5.4 seconds and should manage 590 kilometers of range.

Serene

The Volkswagen ID.7 is produced to be the Rolls-Royce of the brand and VW did an awesome job with that! The ID.7 glides like a giant through the streets. That isn’t surprising with a length of almost 5 meters (like we told you before) and with a weight of 2.2 tons. The adaptive dampers ensure a serene ride, the steering is heavy like an old German and the sound isolation is next level. A true blood grand tourer.

Conclusion

With a starting price of around 60.000 euros, the ID.7 isn’t the cheapest electric sedan. For that, you can look at a Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 or BYD Seal. But you need to know that the building quality and the feel of luxury are closer to the Tesla Model S, Mercedes EQE or BMW I4 which are more expensive. The Volkswagen ID.7 is definitely a step up for Volkswagen in the electric game. A great contender if you are looking for a big electric sedan!
