Taking the 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offroad

At first glance, the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class hasn’t changed that much, but the details give away the changes! Can you think of a better way to introduce the new G-Class than on an off-road course? We can’t.

Stronger than time

Those words came straight away from Mercedes themselves. If you are talking about the G-Class, the word off-road can’t be missing. It has always been a symbol of superior off-road performance and the new one can certainly be placed in this line of thought. The heritage is perfectly reflected in the design with a robust front, a boxy side view with striking wheel arches and a spare tire on the back, just like the old days. It’s the iconic appearance of the G-Class!

There are only a few minor designer changes on the latest Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The hood is just a little bit higher than the previous one, The front camera has been put lower and above the windscreen there is a little spoiler. That sums up the most visible exterior changes.

Recognizably Mercedes

If you look at the inside of the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class, you will recognize almost every Mercedes in the lineup. Some people find it sad you get the same basics in a 30K Mercedes as in a 150K Mercedes, but it works great and cuts the developing costs somewhat. The recognizable part is de big digital dash, but there are also a lot of big differences in terms of comfort. Something the new G-Class isn’t shy about!

More important for the G-Class -if you take it offroading, something you should do- are the buttons to put the car into low-range and to lock the limited-slip differentials in 3 different ways: locking the rear from the front, the two front wheels and the two rear wheels. This makes the Mercedes-Benz G-Class an extremely capable offroader.

Years of experience

In the previous paragraph, we already mentioned that the Mercedes G-Class has the ability to adapt its differential to any problem it is faced with. If this isn’t enough for the experienced offroader, then the next few things wheel try to convince you! The car has a climbing ability of 45°, it can handle water or mud depths up to 70 cm, it has a ground clearance of 241 mm in between the two axles and you have the “transparent hood”, a 360-degree camera system that will help you see every obstacle on the road. Still not convinced? You can drive stable at an sloping angle of 35 degrees and your infotainment system will keep you up to date will all your angles. You can trust us, we went to an angle of 25° and almost needed a new pair of boxers. But that’s a good thing, that means the car is more capable than us and we (and probably you too) will never reach its limit.

Powersource

In the new G-Class, you can choose between 3 different ICE engines. In the diesel-stable, you get the 450d with 367 hp (+20 hp EQ) being the most efficient one in the range with a claimed consumption of 8,7L/100kms. If you go petrol, you can choose between the G500 with 449 hp (+20 hp) hitting 100 km/h in just 5,4 seconds and the big daddy -G 63 AMG- with 585 hp (+20 hp) flying from 0-100 km/h in just 4,4 seconds. We had the pleasure of driving the G 500, which is now the brand’s 6-inline rather than the V8 it was before.

G580

The G-Class goes electric! Maybe you can’t believe it, but it happened and we had a very very very little taste of that car and hope we can bring a full review of this car in the future. Maybe the most funky feature of the car is the only one we had the chance to test: the pirouette. And yes, it’s strange but it can do it.

Conclusion

If you want a capable (maybe the most capable) off-roader on the market right now: you need to get the G-Class. Even us “offroad-noobies” didn’t get stuck and felt like offroad-gods!
