Giulia ready for the road

It may have taken a while, and Alfa Romeo delayed the Giulia over and over, but finally it was introduced. Last week at Geneva FCA showed us the Giulia of the people.

The 510bhp Quadrifoglio showed its face regularly, but the normal car was still to be postponed. However, Ward was present at the Geneva International Motorshow, where the Giulia Super was revealed. Luckily, there are quite a few things that remain similar to the beastly QV.Those similarities are, of course, not its engine options. The QV is dislodged from its place by a Ferrari-built 2.9 liter V6 engine that accelerates this car to a hundred in less than four seconds. The Super has to make do with a 200bhp engine, a 2 liter MultiAir that is. MultiAir is a technique that FCA applies to petrol engines to increase the efficiency and maximum power output. We were hoping for the Ghibli 3.0 diesel V6 engine to take place under the Giulia's bonnet, but that won't happen. Alfa Romeo developed two new 2.2 JTDs that they casted out of aluminum. The diesel engines account for 150bhp or 180bhp and up to 332lbft. An aluminum diesel engine is a whole new thing for Alfa Romeo, since the previous were a bit old-school.

RWD

The thing that makes this new Alfa interesting is that Alfa returned to RWD. Except for some rather exclusive cars, the 75 was the last RWD car Alfa built. A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard and now Alfa added a Q-tronic eight-speed automatic transmission. The Super still has the 50/50 weight distribution and the chassis remains reinforced with carbon fiber. The Super is equipped well since it comes with cruise control, collision warning, a clever braking system and a new infotainment system. The last one you can upgrade to a massive 8.8 inch screen and we're gambling for Apple CarPlay to be integrated since FCA already equips Ferraris with this. To complete all this Alfa offers two packs: the luxurious Pack Lusso and the sporty Pack Sport that contains an aluminum finish in the dash and an optional active front splitter that improves aerodynamics. The Giulia Super can be ordered in Europe at April 15th and will certainly cost less than the QV.
