Citroën OLI - Is less really more…?

This is probably one of, if not the biggest talking point in the automotive industry as of right now. The launch of the Citroën OLI Concept car. Why that is? Find out with us. We were invited by Citroën to join them in Paris for the official reveal.

Citroën really surprised everyone with this rather bold looking concept car. A 90° vertical front window, 3D-printed seats and no infotainment? Yes, these are some things that Citroën has implemented in the concept OLI.

New logo

Or is it really? Well, the real connoisseur will have already noticed that this is a more simple version of what once used to be the brands’ very first logo (1919)! Citroën introduces a new logo for the ninth time in its more than 100 years of existence. The new logo goes hand in hand with a new 'brand identity', which the brand says is opening a new chapter.

We see two simple and more 2D-like chevrons placed in an oval. The brand name is written below in sleek, modern typography.

The new logos and revised typography are not only intended for cars, but also for all communication and marketing expressions of the brand. Therefore, expect the new house style in commercials and on the premises of the Citroën dealers. The new logos go hand in hand with a new slogan: 'Nothing Moves Us Like Citroën'.

What is OLI?

Citroën quotes; “Let's put Electricity on the right path

Designing electric cars is good. But for us, that's not enough.

Our concept car Citroën Oli [all-ë] has been lightened as much as possible to consume as little electricity as possible while guaranteeing you a range of 400 km. It was designed with recycled and recyclable parts to extend its life. So, are we moving forward together?”

While being in Paris, I was told that their main goal is to make a sustainable and recyclable car. For example, they want to lease the one car to as many clients as possible, with the needed repairs in-between of course. But they would essentially re-lease it to someone else, as a new car. Which sounds insane to me, yet it is way more ecologic compared to all of the big SUV’s everyone is driving these days, and most likely only for local traffic…

Which brings me onto my next point, being that all of this weight on the roads, can easily be reduced by just making lighter cars. This is exactly what Citroën did by removing almost all electronics and electronic mechanisms, and for example making the seats in a fixed form, so that there’s no possibility for reclining it anymore. In my eyes this is a whole other level than just an EV. Because yes, they are still using an EV-platform, but because of all its weight-loss, it will have a larger range. All sounds interesting huh?!

Concept?

So yes, the OLI is and will be a concept car. They told us that most likely some features like the Adidas foam floor mats (so cool), will be implemented in a production car at some point. But to me their idea of making a car almost fully recyclable seems quite far away of getting into production, reason being is because we are all way too used to our luxury modern-day cars for now. But who knows, because the whole EV story grew way faster than all of us could’ve imagined, am I right? Let’s see…
